A modern telephone often includes a bell so it can ring and a keypad and
frequency generator. There is an electronic microphone, amplifier and circuit. The
mechanical bell is often replaced by a speaker and a circuit to generate a pleasant
ringing tone. But a regular telephone remains one of the simplest devices ever.
The telephone network startsin your house. A pair ofcopper wires runs from a
box at the road to a box at your house. From there, the pair of wires is connected to
each phone jack in your house (usually using red and green wires). If your house has
two phone lines, then two separate pairs of copper wires run from the road to your
house. The second pair is usually colored yellow and black inside your house.
Along the road runs a thick cable packed with 100 ormore copper pairs.
Depending on where you are located, this thick cable will run directly to the phone
company's switch in your area or it will run to a box about the size ofa refrigerator that
acts as a digital concentrator.

I. Answer the questions, basing on the passage.
What is a Satellite?
A satellite is basically any object that revolves around a planet. The moon is
Earth's original, natural satellite, and there are many artificial satellites, usually closer
to Earth.
• The path a satellite follows is an orbit. In the orbit, the farthest point from Earth
is the apogee, and the nearest point is the perigee.
• Artificial satellites generally are not produced a lot. Most satellites are custom
built. Yet, the GPS satellites (with over 20 copies in orbit) and the Iridium
satellites (with over 60 copies in orbit).
• Approximately 23,000 items of space junk which are floating above Earth. The
actual number varies depending on which agency is counting. This online
catalog of satellites has almost 26,000 entries!
Although anything that is in orbit around Earth is technically a satellite, the term
"satellite" is typically used to describe a useful object placed in orbit to perform some
specific task. We often hear about weather satellites, communication satellites and
scientific satellites.
New words: - perigee: cận điểm, điểm gần trái đất nhất
- artificial: nhân tạo - apogee: điểm xa trái đất nhất
- custom built: sản xuất theo đơn đặt hàng - orbit: quỹ đạo
- space junk: những vật thể bay trong vũ trụ
